Finding Calm in Crisis: Simple Ways to Protect Your Mind and Body During Uncertain Times.
The ongoing and devastating Los Angeles fires have caused overwhelming anxiety, fear, sadness, and even anger for many of us. While these emotions are natural responses to such a crisis, they can negatively impact mental health and manifest as physical issues like muscle tension, stomach discomfort, high blood pressure, headaches, and, in severe cases, even more serious health risks.
To help manage these emotional and physical effects, I recommend two simple yet effective practices:
- Express Your Emotions: Share your feelings with someone you trust—whether it’s a friend, family member, or anyone you feel comfortable with. Don’t hesitate to hug, cry, laugh, or simply talk. Expressing emotions openly and often can be incredibly healing.
- Stretch and Connect with Your Body: Take a few minutes each day to stretch. As you do, focus on how your muscles feel and the relief it brings. Being mindful of your body can ease tension. Consider playing your favorite music—whether it’s jazz, piano, or calming tunes—to create a relaxing atmosphere and uplift your mood.
Taking these small steps can help you release built-up tension and protect both your mental and physical health during these challenging times.
